Germany’s Satyros have been pushing their melodic black metal with an unwaivering DIY mentality for some time now. In addition to releasing all their album for free, the band is now undertaking what they’re calling an “anthology project” where they’ll be gradually putting together unreleased materials packaged together in EPs. This gives them more creative freedom and a hell of a lot of added value to the listener. I think it’s friggin cool that they’re doing all this and more purely out of their passion to make music. Trite as such sentiments may be, it’s undeniable that the musical landscape is changing. Though bands still need capital to undertake righteous tours and, well, feed themselves, the DIY camp has been vindicated in some sense. Personally, the sooner we abolish the RIAA and all mainstream record companies, the better. I’m sure it’s not that simple but, considering even metal’s biggest labels are independent, it’s tough to see any reason to lament the slow decay of major label industry or treat it with anything but the kind of revelry reserved for the fall of a tyrant. Simple fact is, bands like Satyros and Nylithia are making top notch extreme metal, releasing material for free (or close to it) and playing live for the sheer righteousness of it. It’s doubtful that this will ever be the norm but it’s certainly a welcome trend.
